Wolves of Winter 🐺❄️

Updated: Jun 23

“Forget about hunting for the past. It’s gone. Think about the world that’s coming in.”

In 1347, following the brutal battle at CrĂŠcy, six mercenaries known as the Essex Dogs sift through the aftermath of the carnage and their own shattered lives. Now, they face a new challenge: the siege of Calais. To return home, they must endure a harsh winter in a lawless, deadly encampment.

Loveday, driven to find the missing Captain, struggles to maintain control over his men. Romford is tormented by the reappearance of a nightmarish figure from his past, while Scotsman sinks deeper into a destructive cycle of alcohol, violence, and despair. The Essex Dogs are fracturing under the strain, but the war rages on, threatening to claim more of their number.

We rejoin the Essex Dogs as they march towards Calais, following their harrowing experiences at CrĂŠcy.

Dan Jones transports readers to the gritty, blood-soaked 14th century, grounding his story in rich historical detail. Some characters, like Hugh Hastings with his peculiar ginger wig, are based on real people, adding authenticity.

However, it's the Essex Dogs themselves—bound by camaraderie and friendship—that truly drive the narrative. Jones' expertise shines through, but it's his compelling storytelling that immerses you in the visceral reality of medieval warfare, making you feel like you're right there amidst the chaos.

Thank you so much to the author - Dan Jones as well as Zuzanna and the team at Tandem Collective and Head of Zeus for running this read-along.
