The Sea Stone Sisters is a sweeping and enchanting start to a series that blends history, family mystery and a touch of magic into a story that immediately pulls you in. From the opening pages, it feels like stepping into a legend that refuses to loosen its grip.
At the heart of the book are four ancient standing stones on a remote Scottish headland, known as the Sisters of Skara. Raised, according to legend, by a grieving father to guide his abducted daughters home, the stones carry a curse. Any family who disturbs them will be scattered to the winds, never to find their way back to one another.
When businessman Charles Blackmore removes the stones in 1931, the consequences are swift and devastating. His fortune collapses, his wife dies, and his four daughters are torn apart across the world.
Each daughter carries a ring inherited from their mother, a fragile symbol of connection and hope. The story follows two timelines. In the past, Iris, the eldest sister, leaves Scotland for Ceylon in search of a long lost uncle, determined to keep her family together and promising she will return.
Her journey takes her through striking landscapes, from the beauty of Ceylon to the vastness of the Australian outback, even as home feels increasingly out of reach.
In the present day, Roz leaves Australia for London with only one personal possession, an old ring that once belonged to her mother. Feeling lost and unanchored, she is drawn to a painting of standing stones that sparks an uncanny connection to the ring she wears.
As she investigates the painting, Roz begins to unravel Iris’s story and, in doing so, her own family history. The past slowly reveals its power, showing that some stories echo far beyond the lives that first lived them.
I was completely drawn in from page one. The dual timeline works beautifully, and I found myself equally invested in both Roz and Iris. Their stories mirror one another in quiet, emotional ways, bound together by longing, inheritance and the pull of home. The book balances mystery, grief, humour, magic and romance with ease, creating a story that feels rich without ever becoming overwhelming.
The Sea Stone Sisters is a story about separation and belonging, about the ties that stretch across generations and continents, and about the hope that home can still be found even after everything has been scattered.
It is an absorbing, emotional read and a strong opening to what promises to be a compelling series. I am very much looking forward to continuing the journey.
