Never Alone is a dark, addictive psychological thriller that slowly pulls you into a tense and deeply unsettling game of manipulation, perception, and survival.
At the centre of the story is Ella Ademonde, a successful crime podcaster and socialite who appears to have built the perfect life. But from the moment a cryptic letter is left on her pillow during her engagement party, cracks begin to appear beneath the polished exterior she has worked so hard to maintain.
What I found most compelling about this book is how unreliable everyone feels. Ella is fascinating because you are never entirely sure how much of her is genuine and how much is performance. She constantly feels like someone trying to stay ahead of her own past, and that uncertainty creates an undercurrent of tension throughout the entire story.
The dual perspective works incredibly well here. The stalker’s voice is disturbing not because it feels exaggerated, but because it feels believable. Their twisted sense of morality and self justification adds a layer of psychological discomfort that makes parts of this genuinely unnerving to read.
I also really enjoyed how much the book leans into identity and image. Both narrators are hiding parts of themselves, rewriting their own narratives in real time, and desperately trying to control how they are perceived. The thriller elements work well, but for me, the strongest aspect was watching those carefully constructed versions of themselves slowly begin to unravel.
The pacing is sharp without feeling rushed. There is a slow burn quality to the tension that makes everything feel increasingly claustrophobic, and the author knows exactly when to reveal information and when to hold back.
There are definite comparisons to You, particularly in the intimacy of the narration and the obsessive psychological focus, but this still feels like its own story with its own voice and atmosphere.
Dark, tense, and psychologically messy in the best possible way, this is the kind of thriller that keeps you constantly questioning who deserves your trust.
Thank you to April and the team at Datura Books for running this book-tour! The book is out now and available to purchase.
