Book Mail Round-Up 💌

This week's round-up of beautiful book mail!

I'm excited to begin sharing a roundup of the book mail I've received recently. I can't wait to delve into these books and share my thoughts through reviews!

As always, a huge thank you to all the authors and publishers for sending these out to me! 🫶🏻

The Devil You Know by Neil Lancaster:

Beata Dabrowski vanished without a trace after planning to meet her lover in Glasgow six years ago. No leads surfaced—until now.

Notorious gang leader Davie Hardie, currently behind bars, claims he knows exactly where Beata’s body lies. In exchange for his freedom, he’s willing to take the police to her grave.

When DS Max Craigie is pulled into the case after the mission is sabotaged, he realizes that someone inside the system is leaking vital information. Max’s mission: expose the corruption and bring Beata’s killer to justice. But in a world where alliances shift and loyalties are uncertain, can you trust a killer to catch another?

This is book five in the series but can be read as a stand-alone (but I do recommend the whole series). Thank you so much to the author - Neil Lancaster as well as Felicity and the team at HQ Stories, for organising a giveaway for this book. I’m thrilled to have been selected as the winner!

Shattered by Hanif Kureishi:

"A few days ago, a bomb went off in my life, but this bomb has also shattered the lives of those around me. My partner, my children, my friends".

On Boxing Day 2022 in Rome, Hanif Kureishi suffered a devastating fall. When he regained consciousness, lying in a pool of blood, he was confronted with a terrifying reality: he had lost the ability to move his limbs. Walking, writing, and even basic tasks like washing were no longer possible without the constant assistance of others. His life became one of complete dependency, as he embarked on a long, challenging journey through the Italian medical system, holding on to the hope of one day returning to his home in London.

Confined to hospital beds for months, Kureishi’s need to write never left him. But without the ability to hold a pen or type, he began dictating his thoughts to family members. What emerged was a remarkable collection of dispatches—raw and deeply honest reflections on a life upended, dictated from the confines of his hospital room. These entries, recorded with courage and clarity, would become a journal chronicling his fragmented world.

That Beautiful Atlantic Waltz by Malachy Tallack:

Set against the backdrop of Shetland's rugged beauty, That Beautiful Atlantic Waltz offers a poignant and deeply reflective look at what it means to call a place home.

In 1957, Sonny toils aboard a whaling ship in the treacherous South Atlantic, facing the fury of unforgiving storms. His time at sea is harsh and gruelling, shaping him in ways he cannot fully comprehend. Upon returning to Shetland, he hopes to settle into a quieter life with his wife and young son, yet the weight of his seafaring past lingers, affecting them all.

Fast-forward to present-day Shetland, where Jack, now an elderly man, lives a quiet, isolated life in the same cottage where he spent his childhood, nestled at the base of a hill. One evening, an unexpected visitor arrives at his door, disrupting the familiar rhythm of his solitude and altering his life in ways he never anticipated.

This book is a heartfelt exploration of unlikely bonds, yearning, the power of music, and the deep-rooted ties to one’s homeland. It is a tale of revisiting and reimagining a life, told through a moving narrative of reflection and connection.
