⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

“The therapist asks how I feel, and I tell her, dismembered.”

Tiffany Clarke Harrison’s Blue Hour is an extraordinary piece of literature, poetic, raw and profoundly moving.

From the very first page, I was completely immersed in the narrator’s journey as she navigates the complexities of motherhood, infertility, racial identity, grief and love in an America that feels increasingly fractured.

Harrison’s prose is breathtaking. The fragmented style mirrors the narrator’s internal turmoil, creating a reading experience that is both intimate and unflinchingly honest.

I was particularly lost for words at how exquisitely she described miscarriage and loss. The pain, the emptiness, the silent grief, it was all captured in such a visceral and heart-wrenching way that I had to pause and let the weight of it settle before continuing. It is rare to find writing that so powerfully conveys the depths of such personal suffering.

The book also explores racial prejudice in a way that is deeply affecting. The narrator’s fear of bringing a Black child into a world where violence and injustice are everyday realities is harrowing, and it made me reflect on issues I have the privilege of not facing in my own life.

Beyond its emotional intensity, Blue Hour is also a thought-provoking book. I thoroughly enjoyed the book club questions at the end, which made me reconsider elements I had not fully explored while reading. It pushed me to think more deeply about the choices the narrator makes, her struggles with marriage and motherhood, and the broader societal themes woven into the story.

For a book of relatively few words, Blue Hour carries an unshakable weight. It is fearless, lyrical and deeply human. Tiffany Clarke Harrison has crafted a story that lingers long after the final page, one that deserves every bit of praise it receives.

A definite five-star read.
