One of the things I admired most was how original the story feels. Although it contains elements of dark fantasy, horror and folklore, it never settles comfortably into any single genre. Instead, Scott Hawkins creates something entirely its own, resulting in a reading experience that continually surprised me.
Despite being relatively short, the book never feels rushed. Every chapter unfolds with an almost dreamlike, episodic quality that becomes increasingly immersive as Blacktail's journey progresses. Rather than racing towards its conclusion, the story allows each encounter to build upon the last, creating an atmosphere that becomes stranger, darker and more unsettling with every step.
The horror elements are exceptionally effective. The graphic violence is vivid and uncompromising, reinforcing the harsh reality of the world Hawkins has created. Nothing is softened for the reader, making the brutality feel purposeful rather than gratuitous. There were several moments that genuinely shocked me, and more than once I found myself instinctively wanting to defend some of the human characters, despite fully understanding the rage driving Blacktail's actions. That moral conflict is one of the book's greatest strengths.
The environmental message is equally powerful. Rather than offering subtle commentary, the book confronts humanity's relationship with nature head-on, forcing readers to consider what the world might look like if the balance of power were reversed. It is provocative, uncomfortable and remarkably effective because it refuses to dilute its central themes.
By the time I reached the final chapters, the story had taken on an almost mythic quality, blending fantasy and horror into something hauntingly memorable. It is imaginative, fearless and unlike anything I have read recently.
Dark, uncompromising and brilliantly original, Blacktail is an unforgettable piece of speculative fiction that lingers long after the final page, challenging readers to reconsider humanity's place within the natural world.
