"Then the storms came. Infertility was one of them, shaking everything I thought was secure. I hadn’t prepared for a storm that big. I thought smooth sailing was guaranteed. But storms test us, and they reveal where our true foundation lies".
The Mother I Never Became is a deeply personal and emotional memoir that explores infertility, identity, and the process of rebuilding a sense of self when life does not unfold as expected.
At its core, this book follows the author’s journey through infertility and the impact it has on her life, her marriage, and her understanding of herself.
There is a real honesty in the way she shares her experiences, particularly the grief, frustration, and sense of loss that can come with a path that looks very different from the one she had imagined.
What stood out to me most was how openly the author expresses her emotions. The pain of infertility is not softened or simplified, and the book offers a clear look at how it can affect everyday life as well as relationships. It is a moving and powerful account that many readers will find relatable and comforting.
While I am not religious, I could still appreciate the role faith played in the author’s journey. It is clear that her belief system provided her with strength, healing, and a sense of purpose during an incredibly difficult time.
However, for me personally, the strong focus on faith did take up a large portion of the book, which made it slightly harder to connect with in places.
That said, the overall message of the book is meaningful and important. It centres on self worth, acceptance, and understanding that identity is not defined by motherhood alone. The reminder that a person’s value is not determined by what has or has not happened in their life is a powerful one.
The Mother I Never Became is an honest and heartfelt memoir that will resonate strongly with readers who have experienced infertility or who are navigating questions around identity and expectation.
