The Millionaire Waltz is a richly atmospheric historical story set in London during the 1920s, capturing a city still finding its feet after the devastation of the First World War.
At the centre of the story is Edie Greenlaw, a charismatic and intelligent woman trying to decide what she truly wants from life. Society expects her future to be simple and respectable. A marriage to her handsome war hero fiancรฉ should represent stability, security, and success. Yet as that future draws closer, Edie begins to feel that the life laid out before her may not be the one she wants.
When she attempts to help a friend in trouble, Edie finds herself pulled into a dangerous world of blackmail, scandal, and hidden secrets.
What begins as an act of loyalty quickly entangles her in a shadowy network of power and exploitation that threatens both her reputation and her safety.
The story moves at a lively pace, combining suspense with rich historical detail. Edie is a wonderfully engaging central character. She is sharp, observant, and determined to make her own decisions, even when society would prefer her to remain quiet and obedient.
One of the most enjoyable aspects of this book is the vivid sense of place. London in the 1920s is portrayed as glamorous yet fragile, a city rebuilding itself while still carrying the scars of war. The references to the drinks, social customs, and nightlife of the time add texture to the setting and bring the era to life.
What I particularly appreciated was how the book shows both sides of this world. The glitter of high society sits alongside the darker corners of the city where secrets are whispered and scandals are carefully hidden. Sexuality, reputation, and power all exist in uneasy tension, often discussed only in shadowy corridors far from public view.
The atmosphere throughout the book feels authentic and immersive. The London depicted here is very different from the modern metropolis we know today, yet it still feels alive and recognisable.
With its engaging heroine, strong sense of time and place, and steadily building tension, The Millionaire Waltz offers an absorbing glimpse into a world shaped by glamour, danger, and social expectation.
