Exhausted from caring for a new baby and wary of her critical mother in law, she approaches the holiday with far less optimism. Their alternating chapters work brilliantly, giving the reader two distinct voices and viewpoints as tensions slowly build.

As the holiday unfolds, the shadow of a past disappearance in the region begins to loom larger, made even more unsettling by a new girl going missing. Suspicion spreads and the sense that everyone is hiding something grows stronger with each chapter.

The atmosphere is expertly handled, with subtle clues and uneasy moments leading you in one direction before pulling the rug out from under you.

The characters are well drawn and the twists are genuinely surprising. Just when you think you have worked out what is happening, the story shifts again.

This is a compelling psychological thriller that keeps you guessing until the final pages and proves that family holidays can be anything but relaxing.
