“You’re overthinking it.”

“I have anxiety. I have no other type of thinking available.”

Receiving this beautiful limited edition instantly reminded me why this book has resonated with so many readers over the years.

At the centre of the story is Nora, who feels completely lost and overwhelmed by her life. Convinced she has disappointed everyone and that her existence has little impact, she makes the decision that she no longer wants to continue.

What follows is the introduction of The Midnight Library, a space between life and death, filled with books that each represent a different version of Nora’s life. Every possible path, every decision she could have made, exists within its shelves.

Through these alternate lives, Nora begins to explore the endless “what ifs” that so many of us carry.

This is a book that stays with you.

The central message feels simple but incredibly powerful. The only way to understand life is to live it. No amount of overthinking, regret, or imagined outcomes can replace actually being present in your own life.

Reading this at a time when I was struggling with anxiety and stress made it hit even harder. It felt like everything had built up at once and come crashing down, leaving me trying to process it all at the same time. I remember thinking this might be too heavy to read in that moment, but I am so glad I continued.

There is something deeply comforting in the way this book explores regret. It does not dismiss those feelings, but instead gently reframes them, showing that no life is perfect, no path is without difficulty, and no single decision defines everything.

This special edition feels like a fitting way to revisit a story that continues to offer perspective and reassurance. It is a book that invites reflection, encourages compassion towards yourself, and reminds you that your life, as it is, still holds meaning.

It is one of those books that you finish and immediately want to recommend to others.

Thank you to Jamie and the team at Canongate for choosing me to be part of this 10th anniversary read-along.
