I was absolutely delighted to be invited by EDPR, alongside Harrogate International Festivals, to the 2025 Theakston Old Peculier Crime Writing Festival. From the moment I stepped into Harrogate and the historic Old Swan Hotel, the place was alive with literary energy and a passion for crime fiction that never ceases to amaze me.
There’s far too much to squeeze into one post, but here are just a few standout moments from an unforgettable weekend:
Post‑Mortem Postcode Lottery:
This was one of the most thought‑provoking discussions I attended. The panel featured Chris Chibnall, AA Dhand, Belinda Bauer, Mel Pennant,Trisha Sakhlecha, and Simon Mayo delving into how geography, inequality and social context can shape both victims and investigations. It was eye-opening and powerful.

Jack Reacher Room with Transworld & Penguin:
Transworld and Penguin transformed this space into a Reacher fan’s dream, packed with advanced copies, exclusive editions and bookish treasures. I may or may not have spent a bit too long in there...
Giveaways from HQ and Canelo
From cupcakes to proof copies, there was no shortage of bookish goodies on offer. A huge thank you to both publishers for their generosity!
Murder at Hotel Orient:
This immersive experience brought a fictional crime scene to life in the most unexpected and interactive way. A unique twist on traditional panels, and so much fun.

In Conversation with Paula Hawkins and Kate Mosse:
Hearing these two incredible authors reflect on their careers, their writing process and the enduring pull of crime fiction was pure magic. I left feeling incredibly inspired. I even managed to tell Paula about my recent trip to watch The Girl on The Train at The Grand in Leeds.
The Big Read:
It’s always a joy to share a collective reading experience, and this one didn’t disappoint. Bookworms united in their thoughts, theories and takes, it was everything a reader could want. Back again for 2025, The Big Read launched with a bang at this year’s festival and it’s fast becoming one of my favourite parts of the weekend. This free reading group event centred around Paula Sutton’s The Potting Shed Murder!

Janice Hallett Pop-up:
Just as the heavens opened and the rain came pouring down. Janice was every bit as engaging and clever in person as she is on the page. Huddled under the marquee with fellow readers, listening to her speak about her work, was one of those brilliant bookish moments I’ll never forget.
An Extra Special Moment:
I was incredibly lucky to be invited to a Debut Authors Lunch hosted by Transworld Books. Sitting down with these talented new writers, hearing about their journeys and what inspired their debuts, was a genuine highlight. The future of crime fiction is in very good hands.
And honestly... That's just the start!
These were just some of the highlights from an absolutely jam-packed few days. I met so many wonderful authors, fellow book bloggers, podcast hosts, industry legends and best of all other book lovers who were just as excited to be there. The atmosphere was warm, welcoming and full of that special festival magic that only Harrogate can deliver.
Thank you again to EDPR and Harrogate International Festivals for the kind invitation and for such a memorable, book-filled weekend.
Already counting down the days until next year!
