By Sarah J. Daley.
The Violently Departed is a dark, atmospheric book that blends supernatural mystery with sharp character dynamics and a gripping investigation at its core.
The story follows Hero Viridian, a half demon and former nun turned investigator, who is pulled into a chilling case when a missing nun is found murdered in her hometown of Havenside. With clear signs of demonic involvement, Hero is forced to confront both the case and her own past in a place filled with secrets.
Hero is a fantastic central character. She is fierce, complex, and constantly fighting to prove herself in a world that already sees her as something dangerous. There is a real emotional depth to her, especially in the way she navigates judgement, identity, and the pressure to be more than what others expect of her.
The partnership with Oleander Keen is one of the strongest elements of the book. Their relationship begins with distrust and conflict, especially given that he has already tried to kill her, but quickly develops into something far more layered. Their dynamic brings a sharp, witty edge to the story and adds a strong “reluctant allies” energy that works incredibly well.
The setting is just as compelling as the characters. Havenside feels eerie and closed off, with the mysterious Bright Renewal Academy adding another layer of unease. As the investigation unfolds, the secrets surrounding the town, the school, and the missing children create a steadily building tension that keeps you fully invested.
What I really enjoyed was the balance between the darker supernatural elements and the investigative storyline. It has that gritty, almost buddy cop feel at times, but never loses its eerie, haunting atmosphere.
This is a gripping and immersive read with a strong protagonist, a tense partnership, and a mystery that keeps unfolding in unexpected ways. A brilliant mix of supernatural and suspense.
Thank you to April and the team at both Watkins Media and Angry Robot Books for sending out a finished copy of the book. The book is out now and available to purchase.
