⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Natural Selection is a quick, engaging, and surprisingly layered story that blends travel, self discovery, and a touch of mystery into a thoroughly enjoyable read.
Sophia Othonos believes she has finally found a genuinely good partner after a run of disappointing relationships.
When her new boyfriend suggests a romantic trip to the Galápagos Islands, she takes it as a sign their relationship is moving towards something more serious. A rugged nature cruise is not exactly Sophia’s dream holiday, but she is willing to step outside her comfort zone for someone she cares about. That plan quickly falls apart when he cancels at the last minute, leaving Sophia to face the trip alone.
What follows becomes far more than just an awkward solo holiday. Surrounded by the striking beauty of the Galápagos, Sophia begins to question the relationship she thought she wanted and the version of herself she has been trying to maintain.
The setting plays an important role in the story, reinforcing the idea that adaptation and change are part of survival, both in nature and in life.
One of the most interesting elements of the book is how it subtly shifts tone as the story progresses. What initially feels like a straightforward travel and self discovery narrative gradually takes on elements of mystery, adding a layer of tension that keeps the story moving at a brisk pace.
Even though certain plot points become fairly predictable, the story remains compelling and entertaining throughout.
The pacing is quick and accessible, making this an ideal holiday or beach read. The writing flows easily, and Sophia’s internal reflections give the story a relatable emotional centre.
There are plenty of moments where the warning signs in her relationship become clear to the reader, yet the journey she goes through to fully recognise them still feels satisfying to watch unfold.
My only real criticism is that the story feels like it could have benefited from more space to develop. The premise, characters, and setting are strong enough to support a longer book, and I found myself wishing there was more time spent exploring Sophia’s experiences and the twists that emerge along the way.
A fun, thoughtful read that proves sometimes the trip you did not plan is the one you needed most.
