This week, I attended the Press Night performance of The Shawshank Redemption at Leeds Grand Theatre and it delivered a gripping and emotionally charged evening of theatre that stayed with the audience long after the final scene. Thank you so much to Kelly and the team for the invite!
Adapting a story as iconic as The Shawshank Redemption for the stage was never going to be an easy task, especially with the film holding such a legendary reputation. As someone who absolutely loves the original film, I was slightly nervous about how it would translate to the stage, but this production completely exceeded my expectations. Rather than trying to recreate every moment audiences already know, it delivers something that feels intense, emotional and completely absorbing in its own right.
Set within the walls of Shawshank Penitentiary, the production captures the harshness of prison life with impressive realism. The staging feels imposing throughout, with towering prison structures and stark lighting helping to create a constant sense of confinement. Every scene feels claustrophobic, which only heightens the emotional impact as the story unfolds over decades.
Joe McFadden gives a quietly powerful performance as Andy Dufresne. His portrayal never feels overly dramatic. Ben Onwukwe brings warmth and depth to the role of Red, guiding the audience through the story with sincerity and humour. The connection between Red and Andy becomes the emotional core of the production, offering moments of hope amongst the darkness of Shawshank’s brutal environment.
The production does not shy away from the more difficult aspects of the story. The violence, corruption and abuse within the prison system are portrayed in a way that feels unsettling yet necessary, reminding the audience of the harsh realities faced by the inmates.
One of the strongest elements of the evening is the ensemble cast, who work together seamlessly to create the atmosphere of prison life. Every interaction feels believable, adding to the realism and tension that runs throughout the production.
The Shawshank Redemption is a compelling piece of theatre that captures the heart of the original story while still feeling impactful in its own way. Powerful performances, striking staging and a deeply emotional narrative make this a production well worth experiencing.
The Shawshank Redemption is at the Grand Theatre from 19th May 2026 to 23rd May 2026. Tickets can be purchased here.
