“Could a dead, frozen heart beat again? It felt like mine was about to.”
Re-reading Midnight Sun for only the second time since it was published felt like visiting an old friend.
Stepping back into this world again was surprisingly emotional, and it reminded me just how deeply ingrained this series is in my reading life. It felt good to be back with these characters, back in Forks, and back inside a story that shaped so much of my teenage reading experience.
This book being more than fifteen years in the making adds an extra layer of meaning to the experience. Knowing the history behind it, the anticipation, and the years readers waited to finally hear Edward’s voice makes Midnight Sun feel special in a way few companion books ever do.
For nostalgia alone, this is an easy five stars.
Reading the story from Edward’s point of view completely changes the emotional landscape of Twilight. His constant inner conflict, his fear, restraint, and overwhelming love for Bella adds so much depth to moments that once felt simple. Scenes I thought I knew inside out suddenly felt heavier, more intense, and more fragile. Edward’s perspective is anxious, obsessive, and deeply self critical, and yet it makes his devotion feel even more powerful.
What struck me most on this re-read was how familiar everything felt. This book does not replace Twilight, but it enriches it, filling in emotional gaps and offering a new way to understand a story that already meant a great deal to me.
There is something almost bittersweet about Midnight Sun. It reminds you of how much time has passed, both in the real world and in your own life, while also proving how easily you can fall straight back into a familiar story.
No matter how old I get, I am certain I will always be able to pick this book up and slip back into that feeling of first love, longing, and intensity.
I sincerely hope that one day the rest of the story will also be told from Edward’s point of view. If it ever happens, I know I will fall back in love all over again and continue from exactly where it left off, without hesitation.
Some stories never really leave you, and Midnight Sun is proof of that.
For me, this book is a love letter to long time fans. It is reflective, emotional, and unapologetically indulgent, and I adored every moment of returning to it.
