By Rory Power.
Kill Creatures is a dark, twisted, and deeply atmospheric thriller that grips you from the first page and lingers long after the final one.
Rory Power delivers a haunting tale of friendship, grief and betrayal, wrapped in a visceral story that simmers with dread.
Set in the eerie shadows of Saltcedar Canyon, the story follows Nan, still haunted by the disappearance of her three best friends one year ago. As their families gather for a memorial on the anniversary, one of the girls suddenly returns alive.
While everyone else is overwhelmed with relief, Nan is paralysed by fear. Because Nan knows something no one else does: she is the one who killed them.
Power’s writing is vivid and unsettling, perfectly capturing the intensity of teenage friendships and the horror that lies beneath the surface. This is a chilling examination of guilt, secrets and the fine line between loyalty and destruction. There are echoes of true crime here that add a disturbing realism, especially for those familiar with the Slenderman case.
Some parts of the book feel slightly repetitive and slow in pace, which is why it earns four stars rather than five. Still, Power has crafted a story that delivers both psychological unease and emotional impact. Nan is a compelling character, and the creeping sense of paranoia is expertly maintained throughout.
With a striking cover and content that lives up to its promise, Kill Creatures is not for the faint-hearted. It tackles heavy and difficult themes, so be sure to check content warnings before reading.
If you are looking for a gritty, gory thriller that will stay with you, this should be at the top of your list.
