Bittersweet: A True Story of Love and Loss

Content Warning - Cancer, Chemotherapy, Death of a partner, Covid, Pandemic, Grief, Death of a parent.

Bittersweet is a beautifully written and deeply moving memoir that delves into the complexities of love, loss, and survival.

She knew they were meant to be from the moment Lotte met Ben. Their life together was full of joy—flourishing careers, cherished friendships, and adventures around the world.

But their journey took a tragic turn when Ben was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer, and Lotte was thrust into the unexpected and difficult role of caregiver.

Set against the backdrop of the Covid-19 pandemic, the book recounts their relentless fight for Ben’s survival, travelling from London to Mexico in search of a cure. It isn’t just a portrayal of the medical world and the harsh realities of cancer but also a testament to the strength of the bond between two people refusing to give up despite the odds.

When Ben passed away, far from home, Lotte was left to navigate the unbearable question: how do you envision a future without the person you love the most?

What follows is an intimate and heart-wrenching exploration of grief, yet Lotte’s journey is also infused with healing and hope. It speaks to the enduring beauty of life, even in the face of unimaginable loss. This memoir masterfully captures the coexistence of grief and joy, heartbreak and hope, offering a powerful message about resilience and the possibility of finding meaning in life after loss.

As a nurse, I can deeply relate to Lotte’s emotional journey. Caring for a loved one with a terminal illness is something I understand both professionally and personally. In my work, I’ve witnessed how illness can reshape lives and test the limits of love and endurance.

Lotte’s experience of adapting from partner to caregiver mirrors the vulnerability I see in those I support—her struggle to balance fear and determination and the pain of helplessness is universal to anyone who has watched someone they care about suffer.

Lotte’s story is raw and deeply reflective of the realities many face in caregiving roles. Her moments of small victories and fleeting joy resonate with my own experience, where even in overwhelming sadness, glimpses of hope can still shine through.

This book is the perfect example of something that is both heart-wrenching and beautiful. It captures the fragility of life while also celebrating its most meaningful connections.

Thank you so much to the author - Lotte Bowser, and the teams at both Tandem Collective UK and Amazon Publishing for running this read-along.
