This week, I was lucky enough to be invited to attend the Press Night for An Inspector Calls at the Alhambra Theatre in Bradford. A special thank you to Leanne for this invitation.

Stephen Daldry’s multi-award-winning production of An Inspector Calls has returned to the Alhambra Theatre in Bradford after a sell-out tour in 2022, and it has lost none of its gripping power.

With a stunning 19 major awards to its name and over 5 million theatregoers worldwide, this production of JB Priestley’s classic thriller continues to be hailed as the theatrical event of its generation.

The play’s impact is undeniable, and Daldry’s adaptation ensures that An Inspector Calls remains as compelling and relevant today as it was when it first premiered. The Birling family’s cosy dinner party is abruptly interrupted by the arrival of Inspector Goole, whose investigation into a young woman’s tragic death sets off a series of revelations that shake the family to their core. As Goole uncovers each character’s involvement, the audience is forced to confront uncomfortable truths about social responsibility and moral accountability.

Daldry’s direction breathes new life into the production, with the set design creating an atmosphere that is both visually stunning and deeply unsettling. The Birling household is not just a backdrop for the drama; it becomes an essential part of the story, symbolising the fragility of the family’s world. The rain, the shadows, and the surreal staging combine to make this a truly immersive experience.

The cast gives powerful performances, each actor bringing depth and tension to their role. Tim Treloar is especially strong as Inspector Goole, maintaining a steady sense of suspense. The chemistry on stage adds weight to every twist, with standout performances from Tom Chapman as Gerald Croft, Leona Allen as Sheila Birling, and George Rowlands as Eric Birling, whose emotional portrayal was particularly affecting.

Despite being written in 1945, An Inspector Calls’ message remains as urgent as ever. Its exploration of interconnectedness, social responsibility, and the consequences of individual actions resonates with modern audiences in ways that are both uncomfortable and enlightening.

For anyone who hasn’t yet seen this production, it is an absolute must-watch. An Inspector Calls is not just a play; it’s an experience that will stay with you long after the final curtain falls.
