"But at that moment mostly what I felt was peace, secure in the knowledge that by living my life the way I had, everything had come down to this moment. I had fulfilled my purpose".
I read this in under two days and genuinely could not put it down.
A Dog’s Purpose is one of the most touching and thought-provoking books I have read in a long time. I expected a sweet story about a dog, but what I got was so much more. It is a beautifully layered reflection on life, love, and the deep connection we share with our pets.
What resonated most with me was how close to home it felt. Like Bailey, our dog came into my life at a time when I truly needed him. He brings so much healing, comfort and joy every single day, and reading Bailey’s story made me reflect on the quiet but powerful way our pets guide and support us.
I found myself tearing up more than once, not out of sadness but from recognising that quiet, unspoken bond. This book left me asking questions about purpose, not just for Bailey but for myself as well.
Bailey’s journey through several lives is written with warmth and sincerity, and the bond he forms with Ethan in his first life is incredibly special. Their story stayed with me throughout the book and beyond.
There is a perfect balance of humour, heartache and insight, and the way Cameron captures a dog's voice and understanding of the world is both clever and incredibly moving.
I also appreciated how the book addresses real issues that are often overlooked. From overfilled shelters and puppy farms to neglectful ownership and the cruel reality some animals face, these themes are handled with care and honesty. They never feel overwhelming, but they add weight and substance to Bailey’s journey.
It is hard to describe just how much this book moved me. It is heartwarming without being overly sentimental, and meaningful without being heavy. I laughed, cried and finished it feeling both comforted and a little more aware of the love and purpose our dogs bring into our lives.
If you have ever loved a dog, this book will speak to you. I cannot recommend it enough. It is a story that stays with you, gently reminding you that every life matters and every creature has a purpose. i'm not sure i'm quite yet ready to complete the other books to the series.
