⭐️⭐️⭐️

The Ascension of Greenville by Anna Pattle is a short but intriguing novella that explores cult dynamics, fear, and the ways belief systems can be used to control entire communities.

Set in Greenville, Utah, the story centres around the Septosect, a religious cult led by the authoritative and manipulative Dr. Harrison.

The town lives under the constant shadow of a deadly virus, one that Harrison uses to reinforce his power. Members are told that leaving the town will bring divine condemnation, ensuring that fear and faith keep the community firmly under his control.

The novella is structured around the seven principles of the Septosect: Honesty, Obedience, Love, Ambition, Faith, Loyalty, and Knowledge. Each chapter focuses on one of these principles and is told from the perspective of a different cult member, offering glimpses into the inner workings of the community and the varying degrees of belief, doubt, and fear that exist within it.

While the shifting perspectives were interesting,it took me a little while to realise that the narrative had moved away from the cult leader to another member. Once I understood the structure, it became easier to follow.

Despite its short length, the book raises some compelling ideas about how cult leaders manipulate belief, isolate their followers, and maintain control through fear and misinformation. The presence of a deadly virus adds an additional layer of tension and desperation, highlighting how vulnerable communities can become when faced with uncertainty.

At just seventy two pages, this is a very quick read and can easily be finished in a single sitting. The shortness does mean that some elements feel slightly underdeveloped, but the premise itself is thought provoking and engaging.

One aspect that makes the book particularly impressive is the fact that Anna Pattle was only seventeen years old when she wrote it. The maturity of the themes and the confidence in the writing style are striking, and the story successfully creates a vivid and unsettling atmosphere within a very short space.
