Hana's life is a picture of perfection: the ideal job, a flawless home, and a marriage that seems faultless. It's her younger sister, Mira, who seems to be in disarray. However, beneath Hana's seemingly perfect exterior, cracks are beginning to appear as she yearns for children while her husband hesitates, and her grip on control starts to slip.
Mira, on the other hand, yearns for a more creative life but is stuck working at a local café. She despises her flatmate and resents Hana's dismissive attitude towards her writing. Inspiration eludes her until one fateful night when a heated argument between Hana and her husband sparks something in Mira. The words echo in her mind, compelling her to put pen to paper. Yet, what can you draw from your sister? And what can be forgiven?
This is a narrative that delves deep into the bonds of sisterhood, exploring where art finds its wellspring and the true meaning of having one's life in order.
Huma Qureshi possesses an enchanting way with words, immersing the reader wholly into the narrative. The characters' emotions and vulnerabilities are portrayed with remarkable realism. It's often frustrating to witness the lack of communication not just between Hana and Samir, but also between the two sisters. These intricate character dynamics make the story utterly engrossing, and "Playing Games" certainly lives up to expectations.
A huge thank you to the author - Huma Qureshi as well as the whole team at Hodder Books and Kimberley Nyam for the ARC.
