Main Characters is a beautifully inventive love story told in a way that feels completely fresh. Rather than hearing directly from the two people at its centre, the story unfolds through the voices of everyone around them.

Before even opening the book, it already felt special to me. My name is printed on my proof copy, which made it such a lovely surprise from the team at Headline Books. It instantly made the reading experience feel more personal and memorable.

At the heart of the story are Clara and Seb. When they meet in London, the connection between them is immediate. Clara dreams of becoming a film director, while Seb is an actor still trying to figure out who he really is. Their relationship quickly becomes something that the people around them cannot help but notice.

Friends, flatmates, ex partners, colleagues, and even passing strangers all witness the chemistry between them. Everyone can see what is happening before Clara and Seb fully realise it themselves.

But when Clara casts Seb in the film that could define her career, what should be a moment of shared success instead leads to a devastating betrayal that changes everything.

What makes this book so distinctive is the structure. Each chapter is told through the perspective of someone observing Clara and Seb, creating a chorus of voices that slowly piece together their relationship. Every narrator offers a slightly different interpretation of the same events, highlighting how love stories are rarely just experienced by the two people involved.

The technique works incredibly well. It captures the way relationships are often watched, discussed, judged, and remembered by the people around them.

Reading these perspectives made me reflect on the couples I have observed throughout my own life, and even wonder what strangers might have seen of my own experiences without me realising.

Emotionally, the book struck a perfect balance. There are moments that are warm and joyful, others that are quietly heartbreaking, and many that feel deeply perceptive about how relationships evolve over time. I laughed, I cried, and I completely fell in love with the wider cast of characters who surround Clara and Seb.

The writing itself is thoughtful and emotionally sharp, filled with small observations that feel incredibly true to life. I also loved the gentle nods to Leicester, which added an extra layer of charm and personal connection for me.

Main Characters is a clever, intimate, and deeply affecting story about love, perception, and the way other people witness the most important moments of our lives.

Thank you to the team at Headline Books for sending me such a special copy of the book! The book is out now and available to purchase.
