How to Resist Guilt: On What’s Holding Women Back, translated by Emily Boyce, is a thoughtful and compelling book that explores the roots of guilt and the ways it disproportionately shapes women’s lives.

We talk a lot about guilt, but not nearly enough about where it actually comes from.

At its core, this book examines the persistent inner voice that tells many women they are not doing enough, not being enough, or not living up to expectations. Chollet carefully unpacks where this guilt comes from, showing how it is not simply personal but deeply tied to wider societal pressures and power structures.

What really stood out to me was how accessible the writing feels. Despite tackling complex and often academic ideas, Chollet presents them in a way that is warm, engaging, and easy to follow. It never feels overwhelming, which makes the message even more impactful.

The book does an excellent job of shifting the focus away from individual blame. Rather than encouraging readers to “fix” themselves, it highlights the systemic nature of guilt and how it is often used as a tool to control behaviour.

This perspective feels both refreshing and important, particularly in a space where self improvement is often framed as personal responsibility alone.

While some parts of the book were not directly reflective of my own experience, I still found it incredibly valuable. It offered a clear and insightful understanding of the mechanisms behind guilt and how it operates, as well as thoughtful ways to challenge it without reinforcing the very cycle it is trying to break.

One of the most powerful sections for me was the final chapter on activism. It felt encouraging and relevant, particularly in how it emphasises the importance of collective action and resisting the tendency to turn frustration inward rather than outward.

Overall, this is an insightful and empowering book that encourages readers to question where their guilt comes from and to rethink the expectations placed upon them.

Thank you to the team at Picador Books for sending out a finished copy of the book. The book is out now and available to purchase.
