This week, I was lucky enough to be invited to attend the Press Night for Here & Now: The Steps Musical at Leeds Grand Theatre. A special thank you to Kelly for this wonderful invitation. it is exactly what you want from a feel good night at the theatre.

The story is set inside Better Best Bargains, a supermarket filled with big personalities and even bigger drama. From the start, it feels chaotic in the best way, but as the story unfolds, you start to see how the relationships between the characters grow into something.

What surprised me most is how easy it is to get invested. The songs are worked into the dialogue in a way that feels natural, so nothing ever feels out of place.

There is a real mix of tones throughout. It leans into its playful, slightly over the top energy, but there are also moments where things slow down and you get a glimpse of something more emotional. Those quieter scenes really stood out, as they added depth without taking away from the overall feel of the show.

The cast are clearly having a brilliant time on stage, and that makes such a difference. Every performance feels full of energy, and there is a level of commitment that keeps the whole production moving. More than anything, though, it is the sense of fun that carries the show, and it is hard not to get caught up in it.

Visually, it is bright and full of personality. The set and lighting work together to shift the mood when needed, but still keep that slightly exaggerated, feel good atmosphere running throughout.

It is not a show that tries to be anything other than entertaining, and it absolutely succeeds in that. It is cheesy, it is fun, and by the end of the night, it was clear everyone had enjoyed it. It is the kind of production that leaves you walking out of the theatre in a better mood than when you went in.

Here & Now: The Steps Musical is at the Grand Theatre from 5th May 2026 to 10th May 2026. Tickets can be purchased here.
