By L. Ron Hubbard.
Buckskin Brigades surprised me in the best way.
From the very first chapters, this book establishes itself as a sweeping historical adventure rooted firmly in character and place.
Told through the eyes of Yellow Hair, a young white man raised by the Blackfeet, the story immediately places him between two worlds. His loyalty, identity and sense of belonging are constantly tested as he tries to protect the people who became his family in a brutal and unforgiving frontier landscape.
What really pulled me in was the perspective. Yellow Hair’s position allows the story to explore culture, history and power in a way that feels both intimate and conflicted. He understands the Blackfeet as home, not as outsiders, yet he is never allowed to forget how the wider world sees him.
The blend of history, culture and quiet romance gives the story a warmth that balances the harsh realities of frontier life, where survival is never guaranteed and trust is always fragile.
The scenes feel so vivid. Campfires glowing in the dark, heavy with unspoken tension. River crossings that demand courage and endurance. Encounters with ruthless traders who would kill without hesitation if profit demanded it. The setting is immersive without ever slowing the pace, grounding the story in physical detail while keeping the emotional stakes high.
All of this is threaded through the slow burn tension of a man trying to outwit danger at every turn. There is a constant sense of watchfulness, of knowing that one wrong decision could cost everything. The story moves with purpose, building suspense while allowing space for quieter moments of reflection and connection.
And the emotion surprised me. There are moments that stay with you long after you close the book, moments that make you sit still and feel the weight of what is happening. The relationships, the losses and the choices all carry a genuine emotional pull that elevates the story beyond adventure alone.
If you want a historical adventure with atmosphere, conflict and a soft thread of romance woven through every chapter, Buckskin Brigades delivers. It feels alive, raw and deeply human.
Thank you so much to Meliva and the team at Galaxy Press for running this book-tour! The book is out now and available to purchase.
